PASS A LAW THAT REQUIRES THE U.S. GOVERNMENT TO
RETALIATE AGAINST ANY FOREIGN ATTACK ON OUR DEMOCRACY

U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) have reintroduced an updated version of the Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Redlines Act (DETER Act).  This legislation would require the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to issue to Congress a determination on whether any foreign government has interfered in that election within 60 days after every federal election.  If the DNI determines that a foreign government has interfered in a federal election, a set of severe sanctions would be assessed within 30 days.  These include sanctions on major sectors of the bad actor's economy, including finance, energy, and defense.  Every individual determined to be involved with the interference will be barred from entering the United States, plus have their assets blocked.

1787 believes this legislation should cover any and every potential bad actor, not just Russia.
